“How Do You Define Yourself” by Lizzie Velásquez
Lizzie Velásquez is a true inspiration for anyone who’s stuck in a pit of unyielding self-doubt. The documentary star suffers from a rare disease that makes her unable to gain weight. She has never weighed more than 60 pounds, and at 17 years old was labeled “The World’s Ugliest Woman” by a nasty viral video. Did she let that ruin her self-image and rob her of confidence? Nope!
Velásquez’s TED talk, which you can find by searching “How Do You Define Yourself?” on YouTube, is an inspirational look at how your struggles don’t define you and you get to decide whether or not you live a rich, fulfilling life in spite of your hardships. It’s a battle cry to everyone who felt like giving up because they were dealt an unfortunate hand.
“Living Beyond Limits” by Amy Purdy
Amy Purdy loved to skateboard and travel until she was diagnosed with a life-threatening case of bacterial meningitis. Purty was in a coma on life support. She lost her kidneys, her spleen, her hearing in her left ear, and both of her legs below her knee.
Purdy’s story of post-amputation life is truly inspiring. Throughout her difficult experience, she never lost hope. Perhaps one of the most inspiring, thought provoking lines is “Because my legs haven’t disabled me. If anything they’veenabled me.” Your struggles are what make you who you are, and Purdy doesn’t let us forget that anything is possible.
