Fidel Castro governed the Republic of Cuba as Prime Minister from 1959 to 1976 after which he was President until 2008. The communist revolutionary was hospitalized in 2008 for intestinal bleeding, after which then-POTUS George W. Bush said, “One day, the good Lord will take Fidel Castro away.”
While Bush wasn’t granted his wish, the public soon realized just how sick Castro really was. The tyrant stepped down from political power soon after issuing this statement: “It would betray my conscience to take up a responsibility that requires mobility and total devotion, that I am not in a physical condition to offer.”
He died in 2016.
