A Zone Of Rebellion Deep Within The Village
Greenwich Village was also the location for the 1960’s LGBTQ riots. Stonewall Inn, which is located in the Village is still to this day an epicenter and welcoming spot for the homosexual community. The Stonewall Inn is also the location of the Stonewall Riots which were demonstrations by the LGBTQ community against homophobia. The riots began after police raided the Stonewall Inn on Christopher Street in New York City. Although the police raid was warranted for other reasons, the LGBTQ community had had it with police primarily targeting gay clubs at the time. The Stonewall Riots inspired the formation of the Gay Liberation Front and is considered one of the first major protests on behalf of the LGBTQ community.
