The time when this show was airing was a strange one as Americans moved to a more conservative view of the country and the world in general. This change from the liberalism of the ’60s and ’70s to the conservatism of the 1980s was a big theme in the show as there were various characters from each generation which helped ensure a diverse view of the world.

Alex is a young Republican, Mallory was a very materialistic child, Jennifer was a tomboy who just wanted to be a normal kid, and the youngest, Andrew, was quickly molded by Alex’s Republican ways.
