Often times, it actually paid off to get the publicity from the show, but not actually win. Many times the second, third, and fourth runners-up on Idol have done better than the actual winners.

This was true for singers like Chris Daughtry, who was fourth place in season five, and Adam Lambert, who got second place in season eight. Perhaps the biggest testament to this was Jennifer Hudson, who placed seventh in season three and would go on to win a ton of awards, including two Grammy’s.
