Many Of The Characters Names Came From Gary Marshall’s Own Real Life

Creator and producer Gary Marshall wanted to name The Fonz “Arthur Masciarelli”, after Marshall’s original surname. “The Fonz” sounded better than “the Mash” so it was changed before the pilot was filmed. That was probably one of the show’s best pre-production decisions.
