Royal Wedding Fashion We’re Still Swooning Over
Meghan Markle, the stunning American actress you might have seen in Suits or maybe way back when she was a suitcase girl on Deal or No Deal, married everyone's favorite ginger royal, Prince Harry. This union was extremely significant for a laundry list of reasons. First of all, Meghan is American and she married into the British Royal Family, ya'll! That's huge. Secondly, Megan is a divorcé and biracial. To put it into perspective, the last time a British royal wanted to marry an American divorcé, he had to abdicate the throne and his lady never received the title of Her Royal Highness. So basically, Meghan is the spiciest thing to hit Kensington Palace... ever.
Now that she and Harry are officially His and Her Royal Highnesses, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, we can all sit back, relax, and just absorb all the fashion choices we saw. Usually, on such a star-studded occasion, we're used to seeing fashion risks and lots of skin. For this proper royal affair, everyone kept it 100 with modest gowns and plenty of fancy little hats.
Amal & George Clooney
Photo by Gareth Fuller - WPA Pool/Getty Images
Let's kick things off with a true power couple - The Clooney's! Their arrival at the Royal Wedding was a true treat. Amal, the human rights lawyer with Hollywood-caliber style, looked positively glamorous in her bright, mustard yellow dress and matching hat. The design, by Stella McCartney naturally, was eye-catching and form-fitting while staying modest.
Also, let's give props to her for wearing a power color! In a sea of floral prints, blush dresses, and pastels, Amal had heads turning! And snaps to George Clooney for wearing a suit with a tie and pocket square that complimented his fierce bride's look.
Abigail Spencer & Priyanka Chopra
Abigail Spencer played the role of Dana Scott on Suits, the same show the Duchess of Sussex was on for seven years. Turns out, she and Meghan Markle have been friends for over a decade and their bond is tight enough to score an invite to the big wedding! Her partner in crime for this royal affair was the oh-so-gorgeous Priyanka Chopra.
You might recognize her from the recently canceled TV show, Quantico or if you're a Bollywood fan, you know she's been ultra-famous for years. Abigail's floor-length Alessandra Rich polka-dot gown was breezy and fancy with a cute white collar. Priyanka fit right in wearing a Vivienne Westwood pastel skirt/blazer combo. Our guess is the Queen herself gave her two royal thumbs up.
James Corden & Julia Carey
Photo by Toby Melville- WPA Pool/Getty Images
James Corden is truly beloved in the US these days. His late night show pulls out all the stops and most importantly, it has given us the gift of Carpool Karaoke with all our favorite musicians. It's easy to forget that Mr. Corden had a long and successful career across the pond, with the notoriety that pulled him into the same circles as Prince Harry himself.
So, when Harry was running through his invite list, naturally James and his lovely wife, Julia Carey, made the cut! Julia's blush dress with sassy bell sleeves and matching hat were a fabulous choice for the occasion. James went with a dark morning suit.
Queen Elizabeth II & Prince Philip
Photo by Jonathan Brady - WPA Pool/Getty Images
Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and her husband, Prince Philip were the last guests to arrive at their grandson's wedding. Naturally, as the monarch, she gets to make a fancy entrance. After being on the throne for 65 years, she deserves it! On this special occasion, the Queen opted to rock lime green! Oh yeah... she's not afraid of taking a fashion risk, ya'll!
Her lime green coat and the lime, yellow, purple, and gray floral dress she wore underneath were both designed by Stewart Parvin. Her extra fancy hat, complete with purple feather flourishes, was a custom design by Angela Kelly.
Victoria & David Beckham
Victoria Beckham AKA Posh Spice and perhaps the most famous soccer player ever, David Beckham tied the knot back in 1999. And yes, they are still together, in love, and incredibly good looking. I mean, even their children are shockingly good looking.
On this special day, this power couple was completely in sync. David's morning suit featured a double-breasted vest that we totally dug. Victoria wore one of her own designs like a true boss! The navy cape dress had an ideal sleeve. She was able to get a little air and hold her hubby's hand no problem thanks to the unique cut.
Patrick J. Adams & Troian Bellisario
For seven glorious seasons, we watched Patrick J. Adams and Meghan Markle fall in love, deal with cheating, and ultimately get married before their characters exited the show. IRL, Patrick is married to the lovely Troian Bellisario who you probably recognize from Pretty Little Liars! Anywho - this real-life couple clearly scored an invite to Meghan's actual wedding.
Patrick wore a traditional morning suit with a burgundy tie. Troian went with a muted beige dress. The neckline and flourished sleeves were so feminine and pretty. Oh, and we can't forget to mention her shoes! Are those lucite heels? We sure hope so because they look fab.
Oprah Winfrey
Photo by Ian West- WPA Pool/Getty Images
Oprah Winfrey was in the building! Honestly, with all that royalty and Oprah under one roof... I'm surprised a wormhole to another dimension didn't open up. Thank goodness Beyoncé wasn't invited. It would have been way too much for our pea brains to handle. Anyways, we digress.
True to trend, Oprah went with British designer Stella McCartney for the occasion. On her Instagram, Oprah gave Stella's entire team a shout out. Turns out their initial design for Oprah photographed too close to white. So as not to outdo the bride, Stella's team worked overnight to create this blush dress just in time for the wedding.
Gabrial Macht & Jacinda Barrett
Photo by Toby Melville- WPA Pool/Getty Images
Gabrial Macht turned out for the occasion looking dapper as hell. As another Suits cohort that spent seven years working with Meghan, it wouldn't have been a royal wedding without him in attendance! Gabriel will continue on Suits without Patrick and Meghan next season, but we have a feeling he can carry the show with all his handsomeness.
Following Patrick's lead it seems, Gabriel also went with a morning suit with a burgundy tie. His wife, Jacinda Barrett, was a former model and clearly continues to keep it very tight. Her burgundy dress was timeless and chic.
The Duke & Duchess of Sussex
Photo by Ben STANSALL - WPA Pool/Getty Images
So, we know this post is supposed to be about the guests who attended the royal wedding, but how on earth can we discuss fashion and leave out the bride and groom? Harry's traditional Blues and Royal frockcoat uniform was a great look. The embellished front looks like a frilly cravat AKA perfect for royalty. Plus, he was able to keep his signature ginger beard since his Grandma the Queen gave him permission to wear his uniform without shaving.
Meghan's gown was crafted by British-born designer Claire Waight Keller who leads the team at Givenchy. The boat-neck gown was simple and refined. The 16-foot long veil included 53 flowers to represent the Commonwealth. While Katy Perry took to Twitter to say the Duchess should have had one more fitting before her big day, we think Meghan looked the picture of royalty, especially with that tiara on loan from the Queen!
Serena Williams & Alexis Ohanian
Have you guys been binge-watching the HBO documentary on Serena Williams? If you aren't, we highly recommend cueing that bad boy up immediately. In the program, you get a little bit of insight into the union between Serena and Reddit founder, Alexis Ohanian. While they admit to being opposites, they looked absolutely fabulous as a duo at the wedding!
Serena's blush Versace dress fit her perfectly and paired with that fancy hat, she was the picture of poise. Alexis kept it traditional in his long morning coat and muted gray tie.
Prince Harry & Prince William
Okay, we admit, this picture of brothers Prince Harry and Prince William is downright gratuitous. We just want everyone to lock eyes with this iconic photograph. Yes, they are both in line for the throne with tons of responsibilities to the Monarch, but they're also brothers who support each other on these important days.
Big bro Prince William also wore a Blues and Royal frockcoat uniform. Unlike his little brother, William's uniform was adorned with a little extra flare. The golden braids, known as an aiguillette were added to his outfit to signify the fact that he was bestowed as an Aide-de-Camp to the Queen in 2013.
James Blunt & Sofia Wellesley
When you hear the name James Blunt, what comes to mind? Don't say smoking herb, people! This is a fancy guest at the wedding event of the century! What should come to mind is his hit song, "Beautiful." Yup, you probably hear the chorus loud and clear in your head right now, don't you? Well, Mr. Blunt didn't sing Meghan down the aisle, but as a longtime friend of Prince Harry, he was in attendance with his beautiful wife Sofia.
Can we talk about Sofia's dress for a minute? It's positively stunning! Beaded florals for the win! Also, let's take bets on how much this dress weighs, shall we? We're thinking this is at least ten pounds of beading and she wears it effortlessly.
The Royal Family
Photo by Ben STANSALL - WPA Pool/Getty Images
Talk about a group photo! Here a photographer captured a who's who of royals! First, there's the adorable Doria Ragland, Meghan's mother and her sole family member in attendance at the wedding. Her pale green dress with matching coat and hat were a vision. She's standing next to the heir to the throne and Prince Harry's father Prince Charles and his second wife, Camilla the Duchess of Cornwall.
The Duchess opted for a pink dress and large matching hat that fit in perfectly with many of the guests. Next, a true scene-stealer, little Princess Charlotte stands holding her mother Kate Middleton AKA the Duchess of Cambridge's hand. It's hard to believe Kate gave birth to her third child last month!
Carey Mulligan & Marcus Mumford
Acclaimed actress Carey Mulligan and lead singer of Mumford & Sons, Marcus Mumford, have been married since 2012. It's easy to forget since they're pretty under-the-radar in regards to their romance and for some reason, stateside Paparazzi aren't crazy interested in this couple. The good news is, they are still together and they still look gorgeous hand-in-hand.
Marcus rocked a traditional morning suit with pinstriped pants. Carey looked like a true star in her Erdem designed dress. It was dainty with flower details and hit her ankles at just the right spot. Her gray strapped heels and messy bun contributed to her flawless look.
Prince Harry & His Bride
Photo by Steve Parsons - WPA Pool/Getty Images
After the wedding and a luncheon with 600+ guests, Prince Harry and Meghan had a smaller, more intimate evening reception with just 200 invited guests. We have a feeling this is where the true celebration was at. We're thinking bottles of champagne, opulent food spreads, drinking games, and a wild dance floor situation.
Before heading to the smaller gathering, we were given a glimpse at their evening wear as they drove off in an electric-powered vintage convertible. Harry opted for a perfectly tailored tuxedo and Meghan changed into a stunning Stella McCartney halter gown that showed off her amazing arms. We'll call it another fashion victory for these two!
Pippa Middleton & James Matthews
Oh, sweet Pippa! Pippa Middleton, the younger sister to Kate Middleton (better known as Prince William's wife, the Duchess of Cambridge) was the talk of the town in 2011 after her sis's big royal wedding. Back then, there was even talk of Pippa and Harry potentially hitting it off! Those rumors subsided and Pippa is now happily married to James Matthews.
At this second royal wedding, our girl Pippa became the Internet's favorite meme, comparing her dress to an Arizona Iced Tea bottle. While we can see a slight resemblance, we still think Pippa looked great! But, we have a feeling she'll run any future dresses through Google image search first though.
Princess Charlotte & Her Mother, the Duchess of Cambridge
Photo by Jane Barlow - WPA Pool/Getty Images
So, we've already touched on Princess Charlotte, the world's cutest flower girl. But, we think this dynamic mother-daughter duo deserve another look. After Prince Harry and Meghan tied the knot, they had their first kiss as man and wife on the steps of the church for all the happy on-lookers to see. This iconic moment was nearly overshadowed as they took off in their horse-drawn carriage and we all watched Charlotte wave goodbye like a champ.
It was perhaps the most adorable part of the day. Her mother, Kate Middleton, stood by proudly waving them off as well. She wore an Alexander McQueen yellow coat dress and looked amazing despite some snobs throwing shade because she's worn the outfit before. Sorry, but if my tax money was going to fund the Royal Family's lifestyle, I'd hope they'd repeat outfits when they're that fab and expensive!
Sir Elton John & David Furnish
Is any royal affair complete without Sir Elton John? We think not! The man, the myth, the legend was in attendance with his handsome partner David Furnish. They both wore dashing gray suits and solid-colored ties, but of course, Elton did not disappoint when it came to his eyewear.
His round pink frames were bedazzled and gave us just enough of that signature flare. Real talk - do you think this couple was invited to the evening reception? To properly bless that union, Sir Elton John should be there for all the festivities.
Charlotte Riley & Tom Hardy
Tom Hardy was downright incognito with his very shaved head, don't you think? Let's hope he properly sunblocked his noggin in preparation for the long walk into the church that afternoon! Everyone's fave Hollywood tough guy kept it sharp and cool on this wedding day in a pristinely tailored navy suit and sunglasses.
His lovely wife, Charlotte Riley, another famous British actor, wore a new label called The Vampire's Wife. The black and floral print dress looked divine paired with her veiled black hat.
Sabrina Dhowre & Idris Elba
Idris Elba, true to form, had us positively swooning with his arrival. His simple navy suit with matching navy tie was understated, but when paired with his handsome face, he looked like a million bucks! By his side was his lovely fiancé Sabrina Dhowre.
A woman after our own hearts, she donned head to toe Gucci for the special day. With their own nuptials right around the corner, do you think this future bride and groom will glean any decor ideas from the royals? Regardless, we hope she recycles her Gucci pumps. They are drool-worthy and a stellar match for any wedding gown.
A Stylish Crew In Bold Prints And Colors
One of the things we loved most about the royal wedding is that attendees didn't seem to care about keeping things traditional. One look at these bold prints and colors and you know that statement holds true.
Here is Lady Tamara van Cutsem, Natalia Grosvenor, Duchess of Westminster, Lady Viola Grosvenor and Edward van Cutsem as they arrive at the royal affair. The ladies made a fashion statement with their avant-garde hats and kept the theme going with statement dresses. We particularly love Natalia's red dress that featured a vibrant zebra and citrus print.
Earl and Karen Spencer
Alright, how amazing is Karen Spencer's outfit? The deep violet hues against her porcelain skin and jet black hair are to die for. Amidst a sea of guests wearing bold prints, we loved that she wore a monochromatic look that still packed a little drama.
We have to give it up to her husband Earl too. His suit and tie perfectly complemented Karen's outfit without making the duo look too matchy-matchy. Bravo to the Spencers...or their stylist!
The Van Cutsems
Here, Rosie van Cutsem, William van Cutsem and Emilie van Cutsem attend the wedding of Prince Harry to Ms. Meghan Markle at St. George's Chapel. While the entire party looked impeccable, we are especially in love with Emilie's fiery red outfit.
Emilie's attire was in theme with the many bold colors seen at the royal affair, but we love that she took it a step further and donned a monochromatic look. With a matching dress, trenchcoat, and hat, Emilie is the perfect example of how to wear a bold color without overdoing it.
Tom and Lara Inskip
Photo by CHRIS JACKSON / Contributor
Tom Inskip is a long-time friend of Harry. He and his wife, Lara, were in attendance at the royal wedding, looking as chic as ever. Tom donned a charcoal suit with a blue-checkered tie, while Lara rocked a beautifully elegant wrap dress.
There's a reason wrap dresses are iconic — you can't not look fabulous in one! Lara's dress was the perfect choice for a spring wedding, featuring a baby blue fabric patterned with delicate white flowers. Her hat was the perfect complement to her dress and was reminiscent of a large peony.
The Pellys and Meades
In this photo, Elizabeth Pelly, Guy Pelly, James Meade and Lady Laura Meade (from left to right) arrive at St. George's Chapel. While everyone looks great, we have to give extra praise to Elizabeth's get-up.
Bold prints were a theme at the royal wedding, and we can't get enough of Elizabeth's standout floral print. What we love most is that her dress is contrasted with a neutral color, making her gown unique yet understated.
Autumn Phillips and Sarah Chatto
Sorry gentlemen, step aside so we can appreciate the ladies. While Peter Phillips, Arthur Chatto, and Daniel Chatto look handsome in their own right, we are swooning over Autumn Phillips (left) and Sarah Chatto (right) in different shades of blue.
Autumn looks absolutely stunning in this gorgeous cerulean dress that cinches her waist perfectly. Sarah also stunned in blue, opting for a rich navy dress with a sophisticated neckline. One of the real showstoppers was Sarah's hat, which gives us serious royal wedding meets the beach vibes. We're into it!
Princess Charlotte and Kate
Photo by Jane Barlow - WPA Pool/Getty Images
Honestly, how incredibly adorable is the photo of Princess Charlotte standing with her mother after the wedding? Princess Charlotte, along with the other little girls in the wedding party, wore these sweet flower crowns made with small white roses. Her simple white dress was perfect for a young princess in training.
Mom, of course, turned heads as usual. Looking absolutely stunning a cream dress and hat, Kate's outfit was classic and refined — just like her.
Victoria Aitken
Here, Lady Eliza Spencer, Louis Spencer, Viscount Althorp and Victoria Aitken arrive at the royal event. While this group looks stunning, Victoria's outfit was one of our favorites of the day.
We love the beautiful spring green dress she opted to wear. But was most surprising was her hat. Wearing a fedora made of black silk, Victoria's dress was completely different from traditional hats at royal events. You either love it or you hate it — but we give her props for taking a risk and putting an edgy spin on her outfit.
Chelsy Davy
Chelsy Davy is a Zimbabwean businesswoman. She's also Harry's ex and perhaps the ex. The duo dated on and off between 2004 and 2011 so they have some serious history. Apparently, they shared a tearful phone call just days before the royal vows.
If you were attending your ex's wedding, chances are you'd want to look your best While Chelsey did look stunning, she didn't upstage the bride. We can't help but swoon over her royal blue dress with petal sleeves. While she looks happy in this photo, some have joked that her somber expression during the wedding screamed, "It should have been me."
Gina Torres
Photo by IAN WEST / Contributor
Gina Torres, Meghan's former costar on Suits, looked absolutely gorgeous in this red and light pink number by Costarellos. We love that her dress was light and summery but still had an element of surprise thanks to the bold red throughout.
Torres fully understood the power of neutral accessories, opting for a cream hot, clutch, and stilletto pumps that didn't compete with her dress.
Joss Stone
Photo by Pool/Max Mumby / Contributor
Musician Joss Stone was also in attendance at the royal wedding. While Stone and Harry have been long-time friends, it was rumored that the duo was romantically involved back in the day. If that is the case, there was more than one ex who witness the royal vows IRL!
Drama aside, Stone stunned at the royal wedding. Wearing an adorable white dress with floral print, Stone looked perfectly summery. We love that she kept her nose ring in to give her outfit a slight edge.
Princess Eugenie
Photos by Pool/Max Mumby / Contributor
Princess Eugenie of York is the younger daughter of Prince Andrew and Duchess Sara. With a family tree like that, it's no wonder the girl knows how to dress for a royal affair.
For Meghan and Harry's vows, Princess Eugenie wore a simple dress with unique details throughout. The periwinkle shift dress was reminiscent of the '60s and featured bows down the back. While the dress wasn't as memorable as some of the bold prints and colors, we've gotta give it to her for wearing something cute, comfortable, and equipped with pockets.
Princess Beatrice
Alright, we're keeping things in the family here with Princess Beatrice. Princess Beatrice is the older sister of Eugenie and knows a thing or two about royal events.
Princess Beatrice regularly graces lists of best-dressed royals so we weren't really surprised to see her stunning in this gorgeous gown. The silky cerulean number was 100 emoji on so many levels. The monochromatic look was simple in color but featured intricate details that elevated it to new heights. We especially loved the texture and tulle that added volume to the dress's skirt.
Jessica Mulroney
Photo Credit: Jane Barlow - WPA Pool/Getty Images
Are you having Pippa Midleton-related déjà vu like we are? Here is Jessica Mulroney in blue as she walks with the children of the royal wedding party to the ceremony.
Mulroney is one of Meghan Markle's long-time best friends and turned heads as she ascended upon the royal event. Her stunning navy dress paired perfectly with her cream Louboutins. But let's be honest — when you look like Mulroney, you will look stunning in anything.
James Haskell and Chloe Madeley
James Haskell is a rugby player for the Northampton Saints in the Aviva Premiership and a long-time friend of Prince Harry. He and his date, Chloe Madeley, attended the royal wedding together looking perfect in blue and pink.
Haskell looked handsome is a well-fitted suit that was a deep blue color. His dusty pink tie complemented Madeley's light pink chiffon gown with gold details.
Doria Ragland
We already highlighted the royal family's outfits, but we need to take a look at those who really stood out — ie: the mother of the bride.
Meghan Markle's mom, Doria Ragland, looked absolutely stunning in her soft green Oscar De La Renta dress with matching coat. Her outfit was classic and chic yet look absolutely comfortable and easy to move in. Gotta give it up for fashion that's good-looking and utilitarian!
Sarah Rafferty and Santtu Seppala
Sarah Rafferty is Meghan Markle's friend and former costar in Suits. Rafferty, who plays Donna Roberta Paulsen in the American legal drama, attended the royal wedding with her husband Santtu Seppala.
Rafferty donned a dark blue frock with a matching fascinator while her beau donned a suit and tie with complementary blue tones. Already back to work filming Suits, Rafferty told Express UK that it was "hard to leave" the "unforgettable" wedding.
Zara Phillips and Mike Tindall
A pregnant and glowing Zara Phillips attending the royal wedding alongside her husband Mike Tindall. The equestrian is due to give birth in only a matter of weeks, yet managed to look incredible (and comfortable) for the royal vows.
While we loved Zara's gorgeous blue get-up, we couldn't keep our eyes off her earrings — and for good reason. The jewels were a whopping $10,600 from Calleja Jewellers.
Lady Kitty Spencer
Lady Kitty Spencer is the daughter of Charles Spencer and niece of the late Princess Diana. Spencer attended the royal wedding in honor of her aunt's memory.
Lady Kitty Spencer stunned in a forest green dress with a stylish neckline. The gown had an on-trend floral pattern and hit just above the ankle. What we loved most about this outfit was the hat. The piece perfectly complemented Spencer's striking green ensemble.
Cressida Bonas
This list wouldn't be complete without one more ex-girlfriend, would it? Cressida Bonas is the youngest daughter of Lady Mary-Gaye Curzon and entrepreneur Jeffrey Bonas — and Harry's ex of two years.
While attending your ex's wedding might sound awkward, Cressida apparently was more worried about her outfit. "Friends are starting to get married, which means the dilemma of British wedding attire. Hats. Why do I find hats so tricky? Tricky to wear, tricky to look at, and extremely tricky for the poor soul sitting in the pew behind," Cressida wrote. "Most of the time I avoid headgear. This can prompt disapproving looks from the older generations."
