In 2006, Oprah held her first ever national High School Essay contest. Over fifty thousand students responded and submitted essays. They were instructed to answer the prompt, “Why is Elie Wiesel’s book Night relevant today?” Wiesel’s book is a famous account of an experience in a concentration camp during the Holocaust in World War II.

A group of judges, including Harpo employees, teachers, and librarians read the essays. They only chose 50 students out of the 50,000. Wow, imagine all of that reading! Oprah teamed up with AT&T and gave each student a $10,000 scholarship and brought them on the show to introduce them to the world.
